Elizabeth Shutters manufactures custom whole basswood shutters in our own Southern California workshop and installs them with our own team. Family-owned since 1981. Built to hold their fit through Las Vegas heat for decades.
A designer comes to you with samples. No showroom trip, no obligation.
Most shutter companies in the valley lead with moisture resistance. Las Vegas gets roughly four inches of rain a year. The conditions that actually decide how a shutter performs here are different, and they reward a different kind of construction.
West and south-facing windows in a Las Vegas summer can climb well past 140 degrees in direct sun. Rigid vinyl begins to soften in that range. Kiln-dried whole basswood holds its geometry, afternoon after afternoon.
Around 300 days of sun a year structurally degrades plastics over time: chalking, yellowing, brittleness. A wood shutter's finish can be renewed. A degraded synthetic panel cannot.
Desert days bake and desert nights drop. Synthetic materials expand and contract with every cycle. Whole basswood is a single continuous piece of wood, with no glue joints to open under years of thermal cycling.
Every shutter is manufactured in our Southern California facility and installed by our in-house team. The company that builds your shutters is the company standing in your home installing them.
Wide-louver panels for great rooms, precision-crafted specialty shapes for arched and angled windows, and folding or sliding systems for the 6 and 8-foot sliding glass doors standard in Las Vegas floor plans.
Built from whole basswood, never hollow or composite. Our premium acrylic finishes are lead-free, formaldehyde-free, and applied to every surface, which is what stands between the wood and 15 percent desert humidity.
We bring the showroom to you, from Summerlin and Skye Canyon to Henderson and Green Valley, with whole basswood samples, design expertise, and exact measurement of every opening.
Whole basswood is the lightest and strongest wood used in shutter manufacturing. It machines to the tightest tolerances of any shutter material, which means the smallest gaps between louvers, panels, and frames. A closed shutter with minimal gaps is a real barrier between a hot window and your living room. That is where performance actually lives.
| Desert Condition | Whole Basswood | Synthetic / Vinyl |
|---|---|---|
| Surface heat 140°F+ | Holds geometry; wood conducts heat slowly | Softens near working temperature; relies on metal reinforcement |
| Daily thermal cycling | Single-piece construction; no glue joints to open | Expands and contracts; binding, rattling, loosening over time |
| UV exposure | Finish fades over years; fully refinishable | Polymer chalks and turns brittle; not refinishable |
| Fit and gap control | Tightest tolerances in the category | Looser tolerances; movement widens gaps |
| Repairability | Component-level service for decades | Generally replace, not repair |
A designer comes to your home with whole basswood samples, measures every opening, and works through louver size, configuration, and finish in your actual light. You get a quote based on the real build.
Every panel is manufactured to your measurements from whole basswood in Colton, California, then finished and inspected before it ships. The same standard we've held since 1981.
Our employees install every project. Panels are aligned, tuned, and walked through with you before we leave. Lifetime warranty, backed by the company that built the product.
Elizabeth Shutters has installed hundreds of thousands of shutters, closet doors, and specialty doors in homes across California and Nevada. Every dot on the map represents projects completed with care, and our local designers bring California-crafted quality to your door.
“The desert doesn't reward marketing. It rewards material that was dried correctly, sealed completely, and built without shortcuts in the joinery. Get those three things right and the shutters outlast everything else on the wall.”
— Dean Frost, Founder & CEO, Elizabeth ShuttersFree in-home design consultations are available throughout the Las Vegas valley and Northern Nevada. We bring the samples, the measuring, and forty-five years of manufacturing answers to your living room.

Yes, when they are built for it. Warping and cracking in desert wood shutters comes from wood that wasn't kiln-dried to the correct moisture content, thin finishes that leave wood exposed to dry air, or glue joints in finger-jointed construction that open under heat cycling. Whole basswood, sealed on every surface with a furniture-grade acrylic finish, avoids all three.
"Solid basswood" in industry marketing usually means finger-jointed basswood: small pieces of wood glued together. Whole basswood is a single continuous piece with no joints. In a desert climate the distinction is structural, because glue joints are the most likely points to fail under years of thermal cycling.
A closed, tight-fitting shutter blocks the radiant heat coming off a hot window and holds heated air in the pocket at the glass instead of letting it circulate into the room. Wood is a natural insulator that conducts heat slowly, and whole basswood's tight tolerances mean the smallest gaps and the most complete barrier. Fit determines performance.
Yes. We template the opening and shape the shutter to match the exact curve or angle, maintaining clean sightlines and smooth operation. We also build folding and sliding systems for the 6 and 8-foot sliding glass doors and French doors standard in Las Vegas floor plans.
Most projects complete within 4 to 6 weeks from design approval to installation. That covers the in-home consultation and measurement, production at our Colton, California workshop, and installation by our own team.
Yes. A designer comes to your home with finish samples, measures every opening, and builds a custom quote in your actual light and room conditions. There is no charge and no obligation.
The material conversation gets simple when you're holding whole basswood in your hands, against your own windows. We'll bring everything to you.
