Whole Basswood vs. Synthetic in Desert Conditions
Whole basswood is the lightest and strongest wood used in shutter manufacturing. It machines to the tightest tolerances of any shutter material, which means the smallest gaps between louvers, panels, and frames. A closed shutter with minimal gaps is a real barrier between a hot window and your living room. That is where performance actually lives.

Do wood shutters hold up in Las Vegas heat?
Yes, when they are built for it. Warping and cracking in desert wood shutters comes from wood that wasn't kiln-dried to the correct moisture content, thin finishes that leave wood exposed to dry air, or glue joints in finger-jointed construction that open under heat cycling. Whole basswood, sealed on every surface with a furniture-grade acrylic finish, avoids all three.
What makes whole basswood different from the "solid basswood" other companies sell?
"Solid basswood" in industry marketing usually means finger-jointed basswood: small pieces of wood glued together. Whole basswood is a single continuous piece with no joints. In a desert climate the distinction is structural, because glue joints are the most likely points to fail under years of thermal cycling.
Do shutters reduce heat in a Las Vegas home?
A closed, tight-fitting shutter blocks the radiant heat coming off a hot window and holds heated air in the pocket at the glass instead of letting it circulate into the room. Wood is a natural insulator that conducts heat slowly, and whole basswood's tight tolerances mean the smallest gaps and the most complete barrier. Fit determines performance.
Can you build shutters for arched, angled, or oversized windows?
Yes. We template the opening and shape the shutter to match the exact curve or angle, maintaining clean sightlines and smooth operation. We also build folding and sliding systems for the 6 and 8-foot sliding glass doors and French doors standard in Las Vegas floor plans.
How long does a project take?
Most projects complete within 4 to 6 weeks from design approval to installation. That covers the in-home consultation and measurement, production at our Colton, California workshop, and installation by our own team.
